Dear Friend,

With the high holiday season behind us and the clocks having changed, winter is definitely here and our Chaplains and Chaplaincy Couples have been working hard to deliver a broad range of social, educational, religious and wellbeing programmes that engage Jewish students during both the short days and long nights. Through diverse and varied programmes, these initiatives aim to offer something fun and captivating for all Jewish students, irrespective of denominational or political affiliation. With reported cases of antisemitism remaining significant, these moments for Jewish students to come together in joy and celebration are crucial to encouraging positive mental fitness, community resilience and leadership during these trying times.

Campus Highlights

  • Rav Gav hosted the very first sushi lunch for London South Bank University students whilst helping them establish their own JSoc

  • Rabbi Belovski hosted students for the weekly ‘lunch and learn’ in Cambridge

  • As part of a growing welfare and wellbeing programme, students made coasters in Oxford and artisan teabags in Nottingham

  • Rabbi Fishel Cohen held a shabbat service and lunch on campus in Birmingham, attracting 85 people

  • Over 50 students enjoyed a burger night in Brighton at BNJC with Rabbi Matt and Shirelle Marks

Thoughts from Campus…

ree

“Since starting university, I’ve been lucky enough to be one of the many students Uriya and Shima have extended their family to. Over the last couple of years, they’ve opened their home to creating an ever growing family of Jewish students, which has given us all a home away from home. I love spending every Shabbat lunch and afternoon with everyone, playing games and chatting away about our weeks. The Dvir’s also host fun and creative activities every Tuesday evening like tea making, hamantaschen making, escape the Sukkah and many many more, as well as cooking for Shabbat on Thursdays. They’ve been mine and many other students’ support and comfort through our time in Nottingham and we are extremely grateful for all they do.”

Remembering Rabbi Lord Sacks

ree

Last week, we commemorated the fourth anniversary of Rabbi Lord Sacks’ passing. Rabbi Sacks’ profound interest and care for the Jewish student world was steadfast throughout his life; through his early years in the rabbinate, his many years as chief rabbi and subsequently as the universally-recognised global ambassador of Judaism.  University Jewish Chaplaincy remained close to his heart. Becoming our Life President in 2013, Rabbi Sacks never failed to make room for us in his busy schedule and despite his huge workload, was there when we needed his support and encouragement and inspired our growth and development. For us and millions more, his memory continues to be a bright and ensuring blessing.

This month is also Jewish Legacy Awareness Month which aims to help people leave gifts to the community after one’s departure. Such selfless gifts enable the continuation of our mission to ensure that every Jewish student has access to a UJC Chaplain during their time at university, wherever in the country they are studying. If you or a loved one are interested in leaving a legacy to UJC, you can read more about our free will-writing service with our partner, Bequeathed, here.

The ongoing support from our supporters ensures that Jewish life not only survives on campus, but indeed continues to thrive. If you are able to support our work at this time, please consider making a donation through one of the buttons below.

Best wishes,

Sophie Dunoff,

Chief Executive Officer
