Dear Friend,

Well rested after the winter break, Jewish students returned to campus in January, many of whom have been sitting exams. As such Chaplains have been supporting students through their assessments, especially those who have had unfortunate exam clashes with Shabbat. Moreover, they are also busy creating a broad and diverse range of social and educational events that create spaces for Jewish students to meet, learn and celebrate their Jewish identities. In fact, this very weekend saw the first big Friday night dinner of the year for Jewish students, bringing together over 150 students at various Scottish universities, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Monday 27th January was International Holocaust Memorial Day, which marked 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. We were humbled to see many students and Chaplains poignantly marking this historic day, inviting holocaust survivors and their children to speak at events across campus. These events are particularly important at this time, given the cries of ‘genocide supporters off our campus’ and ‘globalise the Intifada’ that have been directed at Jewish students during over the last 13 months on campus.

  • Oxford Chaplain’s pub quiz – students competed to win free places at the next Friday night dinner

  • A pre-exam bagel breakfast in Nottingham attracted a number of students, making sure they started the day nourished and supported
