Rabbi Gavin Broder, affectionately known as ‘Rav Gav’, is one of University Jewish Chaplaincy's longest-serving Chaplains, dedicated to supporting Jewish students across London and the South East since 2000. Born in South Africa, he has also lived in New Zealand before moving to the UK, bringing a broad cultural perspective to his role. He is a father to five sons and a grandfather to three.
Rabbi Broder's educational journey includes studies at Yeshiva College in South Africa, Wellington College, Gateshead Yeshiva and Jews' College (UCL). His extensive rabbinical career encompasses serving as the Chief Rabbi of Ireland and leading three other Jewish communities before his current role with UJC.
In his Chaplaincy work, Rabbi Broder is committed to fostering a vibrant and inclusive Jewish environment for students of all backgrounds. He supports and facilitates a variety of student events, including campus ‘Lunch 'n' Learns’, fresher meet-and-greets, and stalls at the start of term. He also organises larger gatherings such as the Chanukah ice-skating event, ‘London Booze for Jews’, the London Ball, evening parties, Friday night dinners, and Café Hillel informal study sessions. Additionally, he promotes JSoc activities, ensuring their success and encouraging student participation.
Rabbi Broder's approach is centred on being a confidant and friend to students, providing support with university-related issues and promoting active involvement in student life. He aims to help students become more Jewishly conscious and confident during their university years. Inspired by his father's rabbinical work across three continents, Rabbi Broder brings a wealth of experience and a personal touch to his chaplaincy role. Outside his professional commitments, he enjoys family time, reading, learning, and photography.
